Sarah Howard
Sarah Howard is from
Virginia Beach, Virginia
and attended Brandon
Middle School and
Tallwood High School.
She began playing flute at the age of 13 and has attended the
Hampton Roads Flute Faire ever since it began at
Christopher Newport
University. Sarah obtained a
bachelor’s degree in flute performance from
Shenandoah
University in 2001 and a Master’s degree in flute
performance from the
University of Tennessee
in the spring of 2004. Her primary teachers include Dr.
Shelley Binder (University
of
Tennessee), Frances Lapp Averitt (Shenandoah
University), Claude Monteaux, and Frank
Jones. She has participated in masterclasses given by Julius
Baker, Bradley Garner, Jim Walker, Jeanne Baxtresser, Tadeu Coelho,
Jill Felber, and Goran Marcusson. During her studies at the
University of Tennessee
she was a graduate teaching assistant and conducted “Grace Notes” an
adult flute choir in
Maryville,
Tennessee. Sarah has performed with
the Tidewater Winds, the Hampton Roads Wind Symphony, the
International Fame Festival Repertory Orchestra, the American Wind
Symphony Orchestra, The Pierre Monteaux School Orchestra, and the
Oak Ridge Symphony orchestra where she was
Principal Flute for two years. She performed with the
University of Tennessee
Wind Ensemble at Carnegie Hall as principal flute in
2003, and recently won a position in the United States Air Force
Band of Flight in
Dayton, OH.
Sarah has won competitions including the Hampton Roads Flute Faire
Competition, MTNA competitions for the states of
Virginia and
Tennessee. She was also a soloist with
Shenandoah University Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, the
University
of Tennessee Symphony
and Chamber Orchestras, and the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra.
Sarah is currently living in
Virginia Beach, and is preparing to move to
the Baltimore/Washington area. She is currently teaching
privately, performing, and is continuing to take auditions. |
